Introduction
Following periodic acid oxidation, aldehyde groups are exposed in the mucopolysaccharides present in tissue basement membranes and in the walls of microorganisms such as fungi and Pneumocystis jirovecii. These aldehyde groups reduce methenamine silver to black metallic silver. Sodium thiosulfate fixes the developed silver deposits and removes any unreacted silver ions.
