Introduction

Infectious Hypodermal and Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) is one of the major DNA viruses affecting the shrimp aquaculture industry and can naturally infect various Penaeus species. IHHNV infection may cause abnormal growth, reduced feed intake, cannibalism, and increased mortality in shrimp larvae and juveniles. Juvenile shrimp are particularly vulnerable in high-density ponds and flow-through aquaculture systems. Some shrimp that survive IHHNV infection may become lifelong carriers of the virus and transmit the pathogen to offspring or other shrimp populations through vertical and horizontal transmission. As a result, the virus may persist within the aquaculture system, further increasing the risk of production failure and economic losses in subsequent farming cycles.

The kit is suitable for screening shrimp larvae and juveniles before stocking, health testing of broodstock and seed shrimp, monitoring during the aquaculture process, pathogen confirmation in suspected cases, and quality assessment before seed shrimp transportation or trade. Early detection of IHHNV can help farmers promptly identify virus-carrying individuals, reduce the risk of viral transmission in high-density aquaculture environments, and minimize economic losses caused by increased mortality, growth retardation, uneven size distribution, and reduced market value.
