Porcine Pseudorabies Virus (PRV) gE Antibody ELISA Kit

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) can cause neurological and respiratory signs, reproductive disorders, and high mortality in piglets. The SunshinyMed PRV gE Antibody ELISA Test Kit detects PRV gE antibodies in porcine serum. Pigs vaccinated with gE-deleted vaccines usually do not produce gE antibodies, while naturally infected pigs do. This kit supports differentiation of infected and vaccinated pigs and is suitable for PRV surveillance, positive-animal screening, and eradication programs.
Description Package Information Inquiry

Pseudorabies virus (PRV), also known as suid herpesvirus 1, was first isolated by Aujeszky in 1902 from an ox showing rabies-like signs. Pigs are the primary host, while cattle and several other animal species are secondary hosts, usually infected through contact with infected pigs. In endemic regions, pseudorabies can cause substantial annual economic losses, particularly because it is often fatal in piglets. Infected pigs may develop neurological and respiratory signs, while pregnant sows may transmit the virus to fetuses through the placenta, resulting in abortion, mummification, or stillbirth. In adult pigs, clinical signs are usually milder, but the virus may establish lifelong latent infection after recovery.

PRV is mainly transmitted through nasal secretions by direct contact or aerosol spread. Therefore, infected herds in endemic areas should be regularly monitored, while uninfected herds should be protected through effective control measures. Depending on local eradication strategies, disease control may involve vaccination, culling of seropositive pigs, or a combination of both approaches.

When vaccination and eradication by culling seropositive pigs are implemented together, it is essential to distinguish vaccinated pigs from naturally infected pigs, as both may test seropositive. Most commonly used vaccine strains are attenuated gE-deleted strains and do not induce antibodies against the glycoprotein E (gE) antigen. In contrast, naturally infected pigs develop gE antibodies. The SunshinyMed PRV gE ELISA Test Kit is developed based on this principle and supports the differentiation of infected pigs from pigs vaccinated with gE-deleted vaccines.
